Going beyond the symbolic act of switching off lights for 60 minutes in response to Earth Hour, Noi Bai International Airport, one of the nation’s key energy-consuming facilities, has been proactively translating its environmental commitments into concrete action. This is being achieved through the synchronized deployment of advanced technological solutions, with a long-term vision toward green and sustainable aviation development.
From 20:30 to 21:30 on March 28, 2026, the airport reduced the use of non-essential electrical equipment, thereby contributing to raising public awareness on efficient energy consumption and environmental protection in alignment with Earth Hour 2026 under the message: “Green Innovation – Green Future.”
This year’s event continues a multi-year journey marked by strong participation from 147 agencies and enterprises operating within the airport area. Notably, 392 households in the airport’s residential compound also joined by turning off unnecessary electrical appliances.
It is estimated that Noi Bai International Airport alone will reduce approximately 5,500 kWh of electricity during Earth Hour. Previously, during Earth Hour 2025, the airport recorded an impressive saving of 4,800 kWh within just one hour. During this period, public lighting systems, advertising billboards, and parking areas will be dimmed to the maximum extent possible, while all flight operations will remain fully safe and uninterrupted.
Energy Efficiency: A 365-Day Commitment
As a national key energy user, Noi Bai International Airport identifies energy conservation as a continuous and long-term priority. Despite strong passenger growth in 2025, which placed considerable pressure on the airport’s energy infrastructure, the implementation of comprehensive and decisive measures resulted in total electricity savings exceeding 930,000 kWh, significantly surpassing the 658,000-kWh achieved in 2024.
These results were driven by the coordinated implementation of technical and smart operational solutions. A notable highlight is the large-scale “LED conversion” program, replacing thousands of lighting units across terminals and airside areas. In parallel, the airport has optimized equipment operations based on actual passenger volumes, while upgrading air-conditioning systems and cooling towers at Terminal T1. Importantly, 100% of newly procured equipment is prioritized for energy-efficiency labeling, alongside the application of sensors and automated timers for outdoor lighting systems to eliminate unnecessary energy waste.
Thanks to these sustained efforts, total energy consumption in 2025 decreased significantly compared to 2024 across all fuel types, including electricity, diesel oil (DO), and gasoline.
Fostering a Culture of Smart Energy Use
In addition to technical measures, Noi Bai International Airport places strong emphasis on cultivating a culture of energy efficiency among all staff through strict adherence to internal regulations. Practices such as maintaining air-conditioning temperatures at 26°C or higher, maximizing natural lighting and ventilation, and switching off electrical devices after working hours have become standard behavior across the organization. These actions also reflect the broader directive to institutionalize thrift and anti-waste practices as a shared responsibility and an integral part of daily culture.
Earth Hour 2026 serves as a reminder that energy is embedded in every aspect of daily life. Through this initiative, Noi Bai International Airport aims to convey a clear message: every conscious consumption choice not only conserves resources but also contributes collectively to building a sustainable green future for generations to come.
