With passenger volumes forecast to record double-digit growth, Noi Bai International Airport has activated its peak service plan for the 2026 Lunar New Year (Year of the Horse). This year’s approach highlights the combination of expanded infrastructure and a comprehensive “contactless” technology ecosystem to ensure a smooth and convenient travel experience.

Passenger Throughput Expected to Reach New Highs

Based on airline schedules, Noi Bai International Airport anticipates strong growth in both domestic and international travel demand during the upcoming Tet holiday period.

Specifically, during the seven days prior to Tet (from 10 to 16 February 2026), the airport expects to serve more than 725,000 passengers, representing a 16% increase year-on-year, and handle approximately 4,467 flights, up 12.5% compared to the same period. The busiest pre-Tet day is projected to be 14 February 2026 (the 28th day of the last lunar month), with over 116,000 passengers and 674 flight movements.

Post-Tet traffic is forecast to be even higher, with approximately 737,272 passengers, up 12%, and 4,530 flights, an increase of 15.8% year-on-year. The peak day after Tet is expected to fall on 22 February 2026 (the 6th day of the Lunar New Year), with an estimated 117,298 passengers and 676 flights.

Proactive Operational Measures

To effectively manage the surge in passenger volumes, Noi Bai International Airport has implemented comprehensive response scenarios centered on key solution groups:

Terminal infrastructure optimization:

Pressure at the international terminal has been significantly alleviated thanks to the expansion of Terminal T2, which was commissioned in late 2025. With additional check-in counters and baggage handling systems, T2 is capable of serving over 50,000 international passengers per day. During the recent New Year holiday period, the airport safely handled more than 52,000 international arrivals and departures daily.

At Terminal T1 (domestic), all 98 existing check-in counters have been fully optimized. Backup counters at lobbies A, B, and E remain ready to accommodate additional flights or address localized congestion.

Enhancement of the “contactless” passenger experience:

Passengers on domestic flights are encouraged to utilize the VNeID electronic identification platform. At Terminal T2, the airport has invested in a fully integrated suite of advanced technologies, including self-service check-in kiosks, self-bag drop (SBD) systems, automated security gates (Autogates), and modern security screening equipment. These technologies enable passengers to complete procedures independently, reduce physical contact, and minimize queuing times.

Application of technology to improve operational efficiency:

The airport continues to implement the Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) model to optimize infrastructure utilization and enhance on-time performance. The electronic toll collection (ETC) system remains operational at all entry and exit lanes to facilitate efficient vehicle flow. Passenger volume forecasts during peak hours are used to allocate manpower and equipment appropriately, with the maximum number of security screening lanes activated when necessary to expedite passenger processing.

AI-powered automated announcements, smart wayfinding systems, and automated flight information lookup platforms have also been deployed to provide passengers with clear and timely information.

Ensuring aviation security, public order, and traffic safety:

The airport works closely with Border Police and Traffic Police authorities to optimize security screening processes while maintaining public order. Traffic flow is carefully managed in parking areas and terminal access roads to ensure safety and efficiency throughout the holiday period.

Travel Advisory for Passengers During Tet

To ensure a safe and comfortable journey, passengers are advised to:

  • Complete check-in procedures in advance: Utilize online check-in options such as biometric authentication via VNeID, facial recognition registration at counters, airline websites and mobile applications, or airport self-service kiosks. Flight information can be accessed through the iNIA application and smart information displays to save time.
  • Arrive at the airport early: Passengers on international flights should arrive at least three hours prior to departure, and domestic passengers at least two hours in advance.
  • Prepare travel documents and baggage properly: Ensure identification documents (Citizen ID or passport) remain valid and that baggage complies with airline regulations regarding size and weight.
  • Limit accompanying persons: To reduce congestion within terminals and parking areas, passengers are encouraged to limit accompanying individuals and prioritize the use of public transportation.

With thorough preparations implemented well in advance, Noi Bai International Airport and all service units are fully prepared to deliver safe, efficient, and seamless operations, ensuring a positive start to the Lunar New Year for all passengers.
